Le sculpteur Ousmane Sow est mort

La mort du sculpteur sénégalais Ousmane Sow, survenue jeudi à Dakar à l'âge de 81 ans, est "une très grosse perte pour la sculpture sénégalaise et africaine", a déclaré à l'AFP le ministre sénégalais de la Culture Mbagnick Ndiaye.

"C'est une très grosse perte pour la sculpture sénégalaise et africaine. Ousmane Sow a été un véritable ambassadeur de la culture" sénégalaise, affirmé M. Ndiaye, joint par téléphone à Abou Dhabi où il doit assister à une conférence internationale sur le patrimoine en péril vendredi et samedi.

"Les oeuvres d'art qu'il a exposées à travers le monde montrent qu'il était un géant de la culture. C'est une véritable perte", a poursuivi le ministre.

Selon sa famille, jointe par l'AFP depuis Paris, Ousmane Sow est décédé à l'Hôpital Principal de Dakar.

Il a "été très bien assisté médicalement", a-t-on simplement indiqué de même source, ajoutant: "Il emporte avec lui rêves et projets que son organisme trop fatigué n'a pas voulu suivre".

Ousmane Sow était connu pour ses sculptures monumentales de guerriers qui ont fait le tour du monde. Le grand public l'a découvert en 1999 lors d'une rétrospective sur le Pont des Arts à Paris. Ses guerriers Masaï du Kenya, lutteurs de l'ethnie Nouba du sud Soudan, Indiens d'Amérique, colosses figés dans le mouvement, attirent alors plus de trois millions de personnes.

Né le 10 octobre 1935 à Dakar, il n'est devenu artiste qu'à 50 ans après avoir exercé comme kinésithérapeute en banlieue parisienne et au Sénégal. Sa connaissance des muscles et de l'anatomie lui servira pour ses créations. "Je peux me bander les yeux et faire un corps humain de la tête aux pieds", confiait-il.
